Samburu North is located in the arid and semi-arid areas (ASALs) of Kenya. The primary economic activity of the inhabitants is nomadic pastoralism. Baragoi is inhabited by the Samburu, Turkana and a few other communities from the rest of the country. The Samburus make up 75 percent of the population, with Turkanas comprising 20 percent and other tribes 5 percent.
The Constituency being in an arid area receives between 250-500mm of rainfall per year. The predominant vegetation is grasslands, acacia trees, bushes and shrubs in the scenic plains and hills. Because of this, drought is a common occurrence.
Key challenges faced in the constituency includes insecurity occasioned by cattle rustling, low agricultural production, water scarcity, environmental degradation, poor infrastructure, high poverty levels and retrogressive cultural practices.
